Drug Study for Asymptomatic Mitral Regurgitation

FREE cardiac examination and echocardiogram for qualified patients with intent of study participation.

  • Asymptomatic Mitral Regurgitation

    For qualified patients:

    Evaluation for inclusion for this study is offered to all asymptomatic dogs with:

    • Grade III/VI or louder heart murmur over the mitral area, AND
    • Heart enlargement on chest x-rays (VHS > 10.5)
    • No evidence of active congestive heart failure or other serious illness
    • No evidence of dilated cardiomyopathy

Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center is participating in a multicenter clinical trial evaluating a new medical therapy for dogs with chronic valve disease that are asymptomatic. The aim of the new medication is to delay the onset of congestive heart failure in dogs with advanced but compensated chronic valve disease. Enrolled patients will be randomized to placebo or the new cardiac medication and followed for up to 4 years.

The study will pay for an initial visit to Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center for each patient to be evaluated for possible enrollment in the study. This includes a complete exam and echocardiogram.   For enrolled patients, the study will then cover cardiac medical costs for follow-up of the patient for the duration of the study. This will include clinic visits to VCCC at 3 to 6 month intervals for cardiac evaluation. Diagnostics performed at follow-up visits may include an echocardiogram, chest radiographs, blood pressure, and/or laboratory work.
